Before planning your new scheme take a look at the colour wheel.

The warm colours are reds, oranges and yellows which work well with creams and gold, and can create a real cosy feel in a room. You'll find them particularly good for creating a welcoming atmosphere in both living and dining rooms.

The cool colours are blues, lilacs and some greens. These shades work well with white and silver, and will make a room seem larger - good for creating a calming bedroom or bathroom. But be careful to use these colours in a room with plenty natural light or it could become a little chilly.

For a very harmonious scheme choose a maximum of three colours which lie next to each other on the colour wheel.

Complimentary colours are those which lie opposite each other on the colour wheel e.g. orange and blue. Together these will create a vibrant scheme - but avoid overdoing it by using the second shade in small does as an accent colour.

Accent colours give a scheme a real lift. They are normally used in the form of accessories such as cushions, vases, lamps, pictures and flowers but can also be added by painting skirting boards, doors and alcoves.

To get more ideas on colour collect paint charts from DIY stores, there are lots of different ranges available and if you just can't find the exact colour you want, then try the Dulux Colour Matching System to have your perfect shade specially mixed.

To create a feeling of space and harmony use similar tones of colour from one room to another so your eye flows freely between the spaces.

Paint skirting boards in a similar colour to the flooring to give the impression of a larger floor area.
