Changing your decoration can dramatically change the proportions of a room.
As mentioned before cool colours will recede and warm colours will advance so use this to your advantage.
The lighter the shade used the more light that will be reflected, so using white and pastel shades will make a room appear larger.
The reverse is true that deeper, darker shades will appear to bring the walls closer together creating a smaller, cosier space.
This can of course be used to advantage by painting a very high ceiling in a deeper shade than the walls to effectively lower it.
This also works on walls by painting the wall at the far end of a very long, narrow room in a dark shade to bring it nearer.
Using stripes also changes proportions. Bands of horizontal colour around a room will make it seem wider whilst vertical stripes will make it seem taller.
Use mirrors to reflect light back into a room to effectively double the size of a room.
Lift furniture off the floor to create the illusion of more floor space. For example wall hung sinks and toilets in bathrooms and freestanding, plinth free units in a kitchen.
